Organisers at Perthshire Pride have been celebrating LGBT History Month with a look back at their huge success in 2019.

Last year the event in Perth city centre attracted over 7,500 people, as well as Stonewall founder and ‘Lord of the Rings’ actor Sir Ian McKellan, who led the march through the city in August.

The charity have announced plans to bring their colourful Pride march and festival back to Perth city centre again on Saturday 8th August for the third year.

Speaking at a civic reception at Perth & Kinross Council HQ this week, Pride Co-chairperson Claire McKenzie said:

“To see the progress made in my home city of Perth is astounding. My favourite quote from last year’s event was ‘Perth is a city transformed’ and I do genuinely believe that. I have never felt safer or more at home here.”

“We celebrate this year the 20th anniversary of the repeal of Section 28 but we remember to send our thoughts to the community in all 73 countries around the world where LGBT activities are still illegal.”

“We also stand with our transgender siblings who are fighting battles every day and we gather at Pride events to honour those who have gone before us and to remember that history which isn’t too far in our past, and we celebrate and look forward to our future.”

“So when someone tells me to stop shoving it in their face I tell them ‘We’ve fought and suffered for the right to be heard and seen and we’ll no longer sit in silence.”

“We are so thrilled and excited to share the date of Perthshire Pride 2020. This year we have plans for a bigger, better and even more inclusive Pride so we can’t wait to see you all on the 8th August!”

Guests at the reception also heard from local drag queen Scarlet Skylar Rae, Depute Provost Cllr Kathleen Baird and joined in with the Deaflinks choir, as well as meeting stall holders including THT Scotland, Pink Saltire, Perth Parrots Floorball team and Big Dog Books.

Perth & Kinross Council’s dedicated LGBT+ staff network were also on hand to demonstrate their support and commitment to ensuring the authority are a diverse and welcoming employer.
