FILM SHOWS HOW MUSICAL THEATRE CAN HELP GROW CONFIDENCE AND SKILLS IN YOUNG PEOPLE

A new short film by young people in Dundee is highlighting how musical theatre can positively impact your mental health.

The film, released by Pink Saltire and Feeling Strong today, features Dundee Schools Musical Theatre (DSMT) and includes a performance from one of the young people involved in the theatre group – who also happened to help make the film!

Lina Waghorn, Manager at DSMT is interviewed in the film about her experiences, telling us “I was in a school show and I loved the applause, the make-up, the costumes. But what that did for me was it gave me a belief in myself, that I could do something.”

Young people were at the heart of producing the film after spending time with filmmaker Callum Boath, the Interactive Media Officer for the Dundee mental health charity Feeling Strong. The charity provides young people who have suffered a mental health or wellbeing challenge with support to reach their full potential. Callum delivered technical and creative guidance to the young people as part of the charities’ ‘Wellbeing Matters’ programme.

Callum told us:

“The Wellbeing Matters project helped young filmmakers in Dundee create a short documentary on sustaining positive mental health through practising musical theatre. The young people interviewed Lina Waghorn from the Dundee Schools Musical Theatre group, about how she created the group and has witnessed the benefit the group has had on Dundonian youngsters over the years. We were really inspired by the growth and enthusiasm of the young people who took part in the project, and we’re glad they had the chance to tell the story they wanted to tell.”

Stuart Duffy, Founder of Pink Saltire said:

“It’s been fantastic to see young people in Dundee take the lead and talking about something that’s so important to them – their mental health. Not only have they been learning new and important skills for the future and gaining experience of producing their own short film, but in the process they’ve also produced something that so many people will relate to. Dundee is an amazingly creative city and this film demonstrates just a fraction of what’s out there!”

The film is available to view on the Pink Saltire YouTube channel and will also feature as part of Feeling Strong‘s short film festival later in 2020.

The Dundee partnership was part of a multi-location multi-year project being run by Pink Saltire to engage young people in filmmaking skills, funded by the YoungStart programme from The National Lottery Community Fund Scotland.
