SCOTLAND TO BID FOR MAJOR 2022 INTERNATIONAL RUGBY TOURNAMENT

Scotland is to bid to host the world’s biggest international amateur rugby competition in 2022.

The bid will be spearheaded by Caledonian Thebans RFC, the Edinburgh-based inclusive rugby club who held a special event at BT Murrayfield recently to mark the launch.

‘Scotland’s Bid: Bingham 2022’ has already attracted support from across Scottish public sector, including the Scottish Government and politicians.

Thebans Chairman, Luke Fenton, told us:

“It is my pleasure to announce that the Thebans are leading Scotland’s Bid to bring the Bingham Cup to Scotland in 2022.”

“Scotland has a reputation for inclusiveness, openness and acceptance, as well as being a proud rugby nation; all of which makes us a prime location to host the Bingham Cup 2022.”

“The Thebans are hugely grateful for the support that we have received thus far and because of it our sacred band will be going in to the bid process with our spirits up and our heads held high.”

The Bingham Cup is a biennial international rugby tournament, first held in 2002 and named after Mark Bingham, a distinguished US rugby player who was killed in the September 11 attack in New York City.  Mark had been involved in setting up LGBT-inclusive rugby teams in the States before his death and the tournament was launched in his memory.

The Thebans last bid for the 2018 tournament, hoping to bring the competition to Scotland, but were beaten by Amsterdam instead.  The tournament will be held in Ottawa, Canada in 2020.

Scottish Rugby’s Director of Rugby Development, Sheila Begbie, said:

“We are delighted to support the bid by the Caledonian Thebans to host the Bingham Cup for the first time in Scotland.”

“To host such a high-profile event would be a great achievement and testament to all the hard work that has been put into the bid, it would also support us to raise the profile of gay and inclusive rugby. We at Scottish Rugby are proud to support Caledonian Thebans bid.”
