NEW LGBT HUB LAUNCHES IN ABERDEEN

A new LGBT hub will launch in Aberdeen this week, the first of its kind in the North East of Scotland.

‘Four Unity’ will open at Aberdeen Market from 1st May and will be open Monday to Saturday from 10am til 5pm as a safe space in the city for LGBT+ people to relax and socialise.

The hub, run by health and wellbeing charity Four Pillars, has been transformed by volunteers over the last few weeks and will throw open its doors to offer a warm welcome to the queer community in the city and those from further afield.

Founder and CEO of Four Pillars, Deejay Bullock, told us:

“I’m thrilled the LGBT hub can finally open! This has been a goal of ours from the outset and something the community has long asked for. ‘Four Unity’ will be able to offer the safe space people of the Grampian have been wanting for many years.”

The charity will move a number of its programmes to the new hub from 1st May too, including Grampian T-Folk, TransParent, Out & About and Pink Granite. Four Pillars was established in 2016 to improve health outcomes for LGBT+ folk in North East Scotland by focussing on the mental, emotional and physical needs of the community. The charity is also behind the hugely successful Grampian Pride event.

Funding for LGBT+ work has been a growing issue for a number of organisations who are keen to embed recent legislative and social changes in communities around the country. Both the TIE Campaign and Pink Saltire have challenged the Scottish Government on extra funds for the sector in recent months and Deejay says the situation has been no different in Aberdeen.

“It’s been a challenge over the last 3 years getting to this point, more so as funding continues to be difficult to obtain. We’ve stuck to our principles in offering the community what it wants and needs. It wont get any easier from here, but we embrace the challenge with open arms and we will make this work for everyone in the city.”

“None of this would be possible without the support of our volunteers, the community and the general public here in the North East. I’d like to thank everyone who continues to support us, especially our amazing volunteers for all the hard work and commitment they’ve shown.”

You can visit the Four Unity hub at Aberdeen Market between 10am and 5pm Monday to Saturday from 1st May or follow Four Pillars on Facebook for all the latest events and groups.

  1. This is great news for all LGBTQ folk in the Aberdeen area! Well done. We’ve been running a similar venue in Shetland since Oct 2018, but we only meet socially last Friday on each month. Still like pulling hens teeth to get folk to attend!!
