Pride organisations from across the world have spoken out in support of trans rights on international Trans Day of Visibility 2019.
More than 150 Pride groups have signed a joint statement calling out the “hatred and intolerance” faced by trans people and have restated that Pride is an event for those who hold the values of respect and equality to heart.
Pride organisations from Scotland who signed the joint statement were: Dundee Pride, Pride Saltire (East Lothian), Grampian Pride, Mardi Gla, Oban Pride, Perthshire Pride, Pride Edinburgh, West Lothian Pride and Winter Pride Scotland.
One of the signatories, Oban Pride, plan their inaugural event this Spring and Phill Dexter, one of the organisers, told us why being a part of this international effort to stamp out transphobia at Pride was so vital:
“This is a really important step for the Pride movement to come together and reaffirm that Pride is for the whole LGBT+ community, wherever it happens around the world. Here in Oban, we will always stand up for trans people, who have faced terrible abuse over many months in the media. Our identities are not up for debate – trans rights are human rights and we will not be intimidated on matters as fundamental as our right to exist free from discrimination and hatred. Oban Pride will reflect these values completely.”
John Johnston, one of the organisers behind the new Pride Saltire event in East Lothian on 11th May, also told us:
“As a new Pride organiser in a more rural part of Scotland, we know just what intolerance and discrimination can be like for LGBT people – the sustained attacks against trans people just now on social media, in the mainstream media and even by politicians, are just awful. Trans people were there in the middle of the Stonewall uprising 50 years ago and we cannot let that be forgotten in our community. We stand firmly beside our trans siblings and will do all we can to call out this abuse wherever we see it.”
The European Pride Organisers Association (EPOA), who were behind the idea, published the statement today with the hashtag #PrideWithTheT and the full statement is below:
