A new inclusive queer choir is launching in Glasgow and you can get involved by going along to an open day later this month.
‘QUOIR’ is the brainchild of Ryan Laskey and Ellen Smith and we caught up with them to hear more about who they hope to attract.
“So the first event with the choir is really just a chance for everyone to come and say hello and see if its the right thing for them. We’ll ask loads of questions and hopefully those attending will have plenty questions for us too!”
“We really hope to attract everyone from the queer community – we’ve made a real effort to reach out to marginalised groups and personally invite them along such as sex workers and trans groups. QUOIR is going to be a completely inclusive choir if it kills me!”
Scotland has some very successful LGBT-inclusive community choir’s such as Edinburgh Gay Men’s Chorus and the Loud & Proud choir, both based in the East however. Ryan said he hopes QUOIR will offer something different for those interested in singing in the West of Scotland.
“There have been multiple attempts to start [a choir] in Glasgow. What makes ours stand out is that there isn’t a choir like this for miles around. We’ve already attracted the attention of people from across Glasgow as well as some huge organisations asking us to perform them before we’ve even had our first meeting.”
“I think this is exactly what Glasgow needs as, whether we like to admit it or not, our ‘community’ doesn’t feel much like a community atall. Most events like Pride are mainly aimed at gay men so we need more events for the bi/trans/non-binary/intersex members of our communities. Music is the perfect thing to bring people together – as cheesy as that sounds.”
The information event has already had to move the venue to hold more people as the interest has been so great. Ryan says he hopes this could lead to big things for the new group.
“After the information evening, I really hope to hit the ground running and get some songs learned. There’s a few events we’re already preparing for so it’s a bit overwhelming having to organise a choir that doesn’t exist yet. We’d be happy to sing anywhere we can to promote visibility for our community and bring awareness to issues being faced within the community. Hopefully it’ll grow organically.”
You can find out more about QUOIR by heading along to their first meeting, being held on Friday 29th March at 7.30pm in the Queens Park Govanhill Parish Church.
