INTRODUCING SCOTLAND’S NEWEST LGBT EVENT – OBAN PRIDE!

The picturesque town of Oban will have it’s first ever Pride march in 2019, following the launch of a new community organisation this weekend.

Oban Pride will be held on 18th May and the town celebrated with a special event in The Lorne Bar for the official launch on Friday night.

Local drag sensation, Crystal, was the host for the night, which included ‘Drag-a-oke’ and a balloon reveal which announced the date for Pride. Management and staff at The Lorne Bar dressed up in rainbow colours for the occasion as well as decorating the pub in full Pride regalia!

Drag host and member of the organising team, Crystal told us:

“Pride is a celebration of how far our rights have come in this country for LGBT+ people, as well as making everybody feel welcome in all areas of our community. It’s also about fighting the stigma that LGBT+ people still faves in their everyday lives.”

A number of locals have been meeting over the past few months, encouraged and supported by LGBT organisations such as Equality Network, Pink Saltire and Waverley Care. Oban were also represented at the conference of all UK Pride organisers, where they picked up lots of tips and wisdom from other groups.

Oban joins a growing list of Scottish Pride events in 2019, with 11 dates now confirmed for marches all around the country, and more still to be confirmed. 2018 was a record breaking year with 13 Pride events in Scotland.

Some of the Oban Pride team prepare for the launch.

Gary Hamilton has been involved in Oban Pride since the group started last year and told us what events they have coming up:

“February is LGBT History Month so we have a double feature at Oban Phoenix cinema, with a documentary called “LGBT Britain” at 6pm on 1st March followed by the musical “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” at 8pm being live streamed into the theatre. Tickets for both are available from the box office.”

“We also have lots of events planned on the lead up to Oban Pride and everything can be found on our Facebook page. Please give us a like and share so everyone gets to hear about our events.”

When asked about the plans for Pride day itself, Crystal remained tight-lipped for now, but did say:

“We are showing the world that our beautiful town of Oban stands with LGBT people in their fight for equality. We’re working on a programme full of entertainment that the whole family can enjoy for the afternoon, as well as other events through the whole weekend.”

“We look forward to welcoming everyone to the first Oban Pride on 18th May!”
