COULD YOU HELP A CHILD IN NEED IN PERTHSHIRE?

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Perth & Kinross are being encouraged to think about offering a home to kids in care in the region.

Family-based carers are needed to support youngsters who need a secure, loving environment and the local Council is keen to spread the word that Perth & Kinross welcomes diverse families.

A spokesperson told us, “We are keen for anyone who would like to make a difference for children and young people to get in touch with our Family Based Care Team.  Perth & Kinross is a diverse, welcoming area, and we would be very pleased to hear from LGBT applicants interested in fostering, supported lodgings or adoption.”

In a recent anonymous survey of people who care for young people in Perthshire, 100% said they would recommend the Council as a fostering organisation, with excellent levels of support and advice.

The appeal comes in advance of Scottish LGBT Adoption Week, which runs from 5th – 11th March and includes awareness and information meetings being held in locations around the country, including Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dunfermline.

Foster carers do not need formal qualifications – personal qualities like a good sense of humour, patience, compassion and understanding are more important. Full training and ongoing support is provided to carers and fees/allowances are paid reflecting the level of commitment and care they provide to children and young people.

An important aspect of the care system is to place youngsters with a family in the area where they grew up, ensuring there is minimal disruption to schools and the relationships with extended family, where appropriate. The only way this can be done is by having carers in every community.
