A local woman is celebrating after her winning design was chosen as the new brand for Grampian Pride!
After an open competition launched in August, the design that reflected Grampian’s LGBT+ community best was chosen by public vote and announced this week by Pride organisers.
The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, said, “Both my partner and myself put ideas towards it and I put the design together. We used the image of Marischal College as a symbol of marriage equality after seeing our friends get married there last year and as an iconic building in Aberdeen where Grampian Pride will be held. We used the rainbow as an instant recognition of pride, encompassing everyone who fits within its meaning of togetherness and equality.”
Grampian Pride will now use the design as their main logo and it will be seen by an estimated 300,000 people in the region over the next year.
The designer explained the symbolism of the logo was important in the design too, “We made the G & N larger to fit the word pride within them, again as a way of making it feel like pride is something that fits within Grampian. The grey of the building represents the granite city and sits nicely with the bright rainbow.”
The first Pride event for over 10 years is due to return to Aberdeen on 26th May 2018, with charities teaming up with local people and Aberdeen City Council to bring back the event. Grampian Regional Equality Council, local LGBT charity Four Pillars and national equalities group Pink Saltire are leading the plans, with a team of almost 40 volunteers from a range of backgrounds also involved.
The idea for a Pride event came from the work of the North East LGBT+ Community Development Group and its Chair, Deejay Bullock, said the new logo has the support of the community.
“We were delighted with the fantastic designs we received for our Grampian Pride logo competiton. Any of the designs could have won the hearts of the local community, this logo just went that extra mile. After hearing the designers story, she really brings the spirit of Pride in Grampian to life for me. We look forward to welcoming Laura and thousands of others to Grampian Pride on the 26th May”.
