Scotland’s capital city has topped its rival Glasgow in a new poll of the 100 best LGBT cities in the world.
The poll, from property site Nestpick, lists Edinburgh at number 29 on the list, with Glasgow at number 34. Spanish capital, Madrid, was named best city in the world for LGBT people, with London the best UK city at number 5.
The ranking was determined on 5 key factors, with cities being assessed on LGBT nightlife, dating availability, openness in the city and safety. Cities were also given a score for the LGBT rights in their country.
Although Glasgow scored higher in nightlife and dating categories, and was one of the most open and accepting cities in the survey, Edinburgh scored significantly higher on safety, based on the number of hate crimes per head.
The new SNP administration of Glasgow City Council has made a number of LGBT-specific commitments to improve services for the LGBT community and working with LGBT group and charities. They also committed to making Glasgow the best place in Europe for LGBT people.
